A Belhaven Gem Awaits
Peachtree House was born out of a long held desire by the owners, Janie and Stuart Clarke, to own a small bed and breakfast inn, where they could show hospitality and share their love of their city of Jackson, Mississippi, with visitors to the area. They had percolated the idea of purchasing a large historic home to live in and run as a BnB but could not find the right one. When the opportunity presented itself to purchase 1523 Peachtree St., the circa 1937 Tudor style residence originally built as a quad-plex, they embraced the idea of restoring the kitchens and welcoming visitors here.
The Clarkes are both longtime Jacksonians who have a love for history, culture, and the arts that Jackson has to offer. While raising their six children in the Belhaven and Fondren neighborhoods, they routinely took advantage of those offerings as a family by attending art exhibits at Mississippi Museum of Art, performances by the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra productions at New Stage Theatre, Kessler Broadway Productions, Ballet Magnificat, Ballet Mississippi, Mississippi Metropolitan Ballet, and the International Ballet Competition. The family also made wonderful memories at the Dixie National Rodeo, MS State Fair, Belhaven Singing Christmas Tree, MS Braves games, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum, festivals galore, numerous museums, and so much more! Whenever others have commented that there is nothing to do in Jackson, these two have to say, “Oh no! There’s not enough time to go to all that there is to offer!”
Perhaps most importantly is the richness of the spiritual heritage of this place. One doesn’t have to look far to find a house of worship with open doors and arms and hearts. Mississippi is warm and generous. William Faulkner, one of Mississippi’s famous writers said, “To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi.”Located smack dab in the center of the state, Jackson has been called “the crossroads of the South”. It is equidistant from Memphis and New Orleans, and Dallas and Atlanta, making it a perfect place to stop and rest a bit. Stuart and Janie invite you to prop up your feet, stay awhile, and get to know their beloved Jackson, Mississippi!
The house was built along with its twin around the corner, on Belhaven Street, by Mr. J. Stanley Orkin, an optometrist. The architects were Frank Fort and Dudley H. White. The building contractor was C. A. Hollis. The land for both structures was purchased for only $3,000! The cost to build both buildings was estimated to be $33,000! The total cost was expected to be $40,000.
We look forward to welcoming you here, and we hope you will love Peachtree House as much as we do!
